About us

Warp and Weft is a distinguished rug manufacturing company based in Nepal, established in 2021 with a vision to revive the beauty of hand-knotted rugs through unique designs. Each rug created at Warp and Weft tells a story, embodying the age-old culture and traditions passed down through generations of skilled artisans. Our commitment to craftsmanship is evident in the intricate weaving techniques that have been meticulously preserved and perfected over time.

A hallmark of Warp and Weft’s creations is the use of Himalayan Tibetan Wool, renowned for its quality and durability. This wool is hand-carded, hand-spun, and hand-knotted by our talented Nepalese craftsmen, ensuring that each rug is a true work of art.

Our projects and products undergo an extensive design and experimental process, starting from the initial ideas and visualization of the design, material, and production techniques. We select only the highest quality materials, which are then brought to life through a careful dyeing process. The transformation of these materials into rugs involves a meticulous weaving process, followed by washing, trimming, and finishing to perfect each piece.

In addition to Himalayan Tibetan Wool, we use a diverse array of fibers in our rugs, including New Zealand Wool, Pure Chinese Silk, Indian Silk, Bamboo Silk, Alpaca, Pashmina, Mohair, Jute, Nettle, Hemp, and Cactus. This variety ensures that our rugs are not only unique but also cater to a wide range of aesthetic preferences and functional needs.

At Warp and Weft, every rug is a testament to our dedication to quality, tradition, and innovation. We invite you to explore our collection and experience the rich heritage and artistry woven into each piece.

Rug making process

Rug making is indeed a fine art that encompasses various hands-on steps, primarily executed by skilled artisans:

Yarn Selection: The process begins with the careful selection of high-quality yarn, often sourced from local Tibetan sheep for its exquisite quality.

Dyeing: Yarn is dyed using natural dyes derived from plants and roots to achieve vibrant and rich colors, reflecting the expertise of artisans in Kathmandu.

Balling Yarns: Dyed and dried yarn is then meticulously wound into uniform balls, ensuring ease of use during the subsequent weaving or knotting process.

Weaving or Knotting: Using traditional Tibetan knotting techniques on vertical looms, artisans’ hand-weave or hand-knot each rug, creating intricate patterns with a minimum of 60 knots per inch, showcasing their patience, expertise, and attention to detail.

Finishing Touches: After weaving or knotting, the rug undergoes meticulous finishing processes, including trimming excess yarn, washing, and drying. Additionally, relief designs and patterns are delicately carved out using scissors, enhancing the rug’s appearance, texture, and durability.

Throughout each stage of rug making, artisans in Kathmandu employ time-honored techniques passed down through generations, resulting in exquisite handmade rugs cherished for their beauty and craftsmanship. These rugs serve as beautiful heirloom pieces capable of lasting for generations, whether used on the floor or displayed as wall hangings. The dedication to quality and tradition is evident in every aspect of the rug-making process, making each piece a unique work of art.
